Fernando Gomez celebrates 110 years of “dedication, passion and commitment” to the FPF

The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Fernando Gomes, celebrated this Sunday the 110th anniversary of the institution he leads, recalling a “historic milestone” of “dedication, passion and commitment” in the promotion of football and sport.

“This Sunday the FPF celebrates its 110th anniversary. This is, without a doubt, about celebrating a historical milestone, but this is nothing less than the annual renewal of our responsibility, not only sporting, but also social,” says the director of the federation in a message hinting at the anniversary.

In addition, the day serves as an opportunity to celebrate “110 years of dedication, passion and commitment to the development of football and sport”, as well as “the growing commitment to promoting physical activity in Portugal.”

Moreover, the role of sport as a “powerful tool for transformation”, as well as the need to make it fully inclusive, occupies a large part of the message of Fernando Gomes, who believes that the FPF “cannot limit itself to organizing the construction of football and events that are under its control.”

“With this mission in mind, in April 2022, we launched a strategic plan that breaks boundaries and expands horizons. “Football 2030 includes inclusive and educational programs, the goal of which is to bring the sport to more people of all ages,” recalls the director.

An example of this, note, are programs such as “A Hora dos Superquinas” or the motto “Desporto para Todos”, which inspires the 110th anniversary celebration, and will have an event dedicated to it next week.

The FPF’s work to “modernise, educate and professionalise football”, from training to adding value to women’s football, has Gomes believing in a “more sustainable and inclusive future for the sport in Portugal”.

In addition, Fernando Gomes’ message praises the increase in the number of practicing federations, thanking clubs, district associations, athletes, partners, FPF staff and civil society on this path of sports inclusivity.

“Let this 110th anniversary be just the beginning of many more years of success and growth for FPF. We will continue to work to promote the sport and its accompanying ethical values,” he concludes.
