Indonesian authorities confirm Portuguese arrested for drug trafficking could face death penalty

Rui Viana, 21, and Fernando de Souza, 39, two Portuguese men arrested in Indonesia on March 17 for drug trafficking, could even face the death penalty. The information was confirmed to SIC by Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesman Ade Ari Indradi.

The judge must decide whether the crime will be punishable by a term of imprisonment of no less than five years and no more than 20 years, life imprisonment or, as a last resort, the death penalty. If sentenced to prison, Portuguese citizens can request extradition to serve their sentence in Portugal. However, there is no guarantee that it will be provided to you.
