A mysterious illness that has plagued U.S. diplomatic, political and security personnel in recent years, dubbed “Havana syndrome,” is believed to be caused by covert activities promoted by Russia, according to a Pentagon investigation.
The now common cause of the disease, so named because of its initial incidence in Cuba, contradicts the official version of Washington.
Dozens of people have suffered from a range of symptoms that medical experts have linked to exposure to ultrasound or microwaves of unknown origin.
Reports began to raise suspicions in 2016, when diplomats and U.S. embassy staff in several countries suffered severe migraines, nausea and even traumatic brain injuries.
Since it was believed that the origin would be from Havana – where there were the most complaints, the United States withdrew most of its personnel from the country, but reports quickly began to appear in other countries such as China, Germany, Russia, Australia. and even in Washington.
Although no plausible cause for the incidents had been identified at the time, the U.S. Congress approved the so-called Havana Act in 2021, which authorized the State Department, CIA and other government agencies to compensate employees who suffered illness while on diplomatic missions. .
An investigation published in 2023 concluded that it was “very unlikely” that the cases were the work of a foreign country, although no alternative theory was put forward for this wave of “abnormal medical incidents.”
Now another investigation, one of the main culprits of which is the US Department of Defense and which was published today by The Insider, Der Spiegel and CBS, says that the source of the disease is in Moscow.
The study also says that, contrary to popular belief, the first cases of the disease may have occurred in Havana not in 2016, but earlier.
“The attacks likely occurred two years earlier, for example, in Frankfurt, Germany, when a US government employee working at the local consulate lost consciousness after feeling as if he had been hit by an energy beam,” the investigation said.
One of the authors of the analysis, Greg Edgreen, argues that the “Russian connection” is the common denominator in all cases, and Russian authorities even awarded its military intelligence unit 29155 for its good work in this matter. .
Members of this group visited all the places where attacks were recorded, also coinciding with these incidents, according to published journalistic information.
According to Edgreen, US investigators themselves had set too strict a standard to bring formal charges against Moscow because, among other things, it would have meant admitting to some “inconvenient truths” such as that the United States had failed to protect its personnel.
The North American Congress approved measures to support the victims. One of them, named Carrie, told CBS how she survived the alleged attack, which initially left her unconscious and then having problems with her memory and concentration.
This FBI agent says she was at home in the US state of Florida when she suddenly felt a loud noise in her right ear, and at the same time, her cell phone battery began to swell to the point that it broke. device box.
Another incident occurred in 2023 in Lithuania during the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) leaders’ summit.
According to sources contacted by the media involved in the investigation, a senior official of the US Department of Defense was attacked.
“This shows that there are no limits on what Moscow will do or attack, and that if we don’t stand up to it, the problem will get worse,” Edgreen warned.
