The Portuguese Air Force will operate from Siauliai Air Base in a mission aimed at protecting the airspace of the Baltic states, starting this Monday until July 31.
According to the statement, the detachment consists of four F-16Ms and a contingent of up to 95 military personnel.
“Portuguese fighter jets will be on constant alert to monitor unusual events or uncertain situations in the air, such as military or civil aircraft that operate in the airspace of the region and do not comply with international flight rules, a situation that could lead to such events, like air accidents. in the air or indicate hostile actions,” the statement said.
The NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, which includes enhanced air policing, has been carried out since 2004. This is the seventh time Portugal has participated, amounting to a total of approximately 2,000 hours of aerial surveillance in the region. The Portuguese Air Force first took part in 2007.
