On Tuesday, a shooting at a primary school in Vantaa, on the outskirts of Helsinki, Finland, killed a 12-year-old child and seriously injured two others the same age. Three injured children were taken to hospital, but one died from his injuries. It all happened in class, just a few minutes after 9 a.m. local time. The suspect fled the school after the attack but was eventually apprehended without resisting. He was in possession of a firearm that belonged to a family member. The minor admitted to what he had done, but did not say what motivated him. After the shooting, students were kept in classrooms for safety reasons, and authorities asked residents not to leave their homes or open doors to strangers. The school has about 800 students from grades 1 to 9 and about 90 staff, including teachers and assistants. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo called the shooting “deeply shocking.” Finland has a strong hunting tradition and gun ownership is one of the highest in the world. School shootings are extremely rare, but two serious incidents in 2007 and 2008 forced the Finnish government to take stricter measures against gun ownership.
