Joao Sousa ends his singles career with a first-round loss

Joao Sousa, the best Portuguese tennis player of all time, retired from singles this Wednesday, losing in the first round of the Estoril Open to the Frenchman Arthur Fils in straight sets.

On the center court of the Estoril Tennis Club, the 35-year-old from Guimarães, who had received an invitation from the organization to play in the only Portuguese ATP tournament, lost to the 37th player in the world with a score of 7-5 to 6-4, in one hour and 50 minutes.

The only national tennis player to win ATP titles (four), including the 2018 Estoril Open, Sousa finished his singles career ranked 28th in the world, the best ever ranking for a Portuguese player. today in the first round of doubles with Brazilian Joao Fonseca.
