The Commission on Transparency and the Statute of Deputies refused to lift the parliamentary immunity of Katharina Martins, coordinator of the Left Bloc (BE), for compiling a defendant for two crimes with aggravated defamation.
The facts refer to 2022, when, after the legislative elections, a Blok deputy called the Chega party a party of “racist deputies”, and the leader of this party, Andre Ventura, “convicted with a final sentence for racism.”
Since the offenses in question are punishable by less than three years, Parliament must decide whether to waive immunity. The commission considered that the statements were made within the framework of “party-political” freedom of speech.
