The President of the South African Parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, was arrested on Thursday after contacting police as part of an investigation into corruption dating back to her time as defense minister.
“She is expected to appear in court in Pretoria” during the day, South African prosecutors spokesman Henry Mamotham told AFP, confirming the arrest.
The president of South Africa’s parliament resigned on Wednesday following allegations of government corruption that resulted in more than R2.3 million (€112,000) in alleged bribes being paid on African National Defense Force contracts. According to the local press, she served as defense minister from 2012 to 2021.
