At least three police officers were injured and more than fifty people were arrested as a result of clashes following a football match between Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb, Croatian police said this Thursday.
The clashes began after the final whistle of the Croatian Cup semi-final match in Split, which Dinamo Zagreb won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Sandro Lukenovic in the 14th minute.
Dozens of Hajduk Split fans rushed onto the pitch to attack Dinamo Zagreb players and fans, who “pushed” them back into the stands, where they rushed and threw seats at agents, authorities said.
Dinamo Zagreb players had to run to the locker room to take cover.
On the streets around the stadium, groups of ultrafans repeatedly attacked police officers, throwing smoke bombs, bottles, stones and other objects at them; three officers had to be hospitalized.
A police car was damaged and 51 people were detained.
“Nothing justifies violence. I regret these scenes and hope that we will never see them again in our city,” Split Mayor Ivica Puljak wrote on Facebook.
