South African footballer Luke Flers died during a robbery on Wednesday evening in Johannesburg after he was shot, Kaiser Chiefs said this Thursday.
“It is with deep concern and sadness that we learn of the tragic and untimely death of one of our players, Luc Flers. A 24-year-old former youth international has died after he was shot during a robbery on Wednesday night in Johannesburg. He was rushed to hospital, where he died from his injuries,” the club said in a statement.
According to the South African press, Luke Flers was at a gas station when he was approached by armed men who allegedly wanted to steal his car and were eventually shot dead.
Flers arrived at the club this season after representing Supersport for several seasons and has yet to play an official game for Kaiser Chiefs as he attended the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
“He signed a two-year contract with the club in October 2023. He had not yet officially played for the club, although he sat on the bench. The club’s management, players and technical team are deeply disturbed by this devastating event. event”, the document adds.
