Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease a Bike) broke his collarbone and several ribs this Thursday as a result of a heavy fall he suffered during the Tour of the Basque Country, his team said, confirming that the two-time Tour champion remains hospitalized as a precaution.
“It was a serious crash on the fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, but fortunately he [Jonas Vingegaard] stable and conscious. An examination at the hospital revealed that his collarbone and several ribs were broken. He will remain in hospital as a precaution,” the Dutch team’s official website said on the Internet.
Vingegaard, winner of the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023, fell along with more than a dozen runners about 30 kilometers from the finish. Emergency services placed him in a side safety position before he was carried away on a stretcher. y with artificial respiration apparatus and neck brace.

The fall occurred on a descent and involved more than a dozen riders, with the organization neutralizing the scene and multiple ambulances on site for the cyclists.
Race leader Primoz Roglic (BORA-hansgrohe), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Jay Wine (UAE Emirates) also had an accident and eventually retired.
