The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued yellow warnings until Sunday for nine Azores islands due to forecasts of sometimes heavy rainfall, winds and rough seas.
According to the IPMA, for the islands of the Western group (Flores and Corvo), a warning of “occasionally heavy rainfall, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms” will be in effect from 17:00 local time on Saturday (18:00 in Lisbon) until 23:00. (12am on Sunday in Lisbon).
In the eastern group (San Miguel and Santa Maria), the same level, also due to “occasionally heavy precipitation that may be accompanied by thunderstorms”, was in effect from 8:43 am this Friday (9:43 am in Lisbon) until 11 am . :00 (12:00 in Lisbon) and due to wind (southwesterly direction, turning west) from 8:43 to 14:00 (15:00 in Lisbon).
The two islands remain under a yellow warning for rough seas (swells from the west) until 5pm this Friday (6pm in Lisbon).
An IPMA yellow warning due to the forecast of sometimes heavy rain, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, was also in effect for the islands of the central group of the Azores (Fail, Pico, São Jorge, Terceira and Graciosa) until 11 am this Friday. (12:00 in Lisbon) and comes into force from 20:00 local time (21:00 in Lisbon) on Saturday and until 2:00 local time (3:00 in Lisbon) on Sunday.
A yellow warning, the least severe on a scale of three, is issued whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities due to weather conditions.
