Two demonstrations of opposing extremes in the center of Porto are separated by just 500 meters. On the one hand, hundreds of people were planted in Praça dos Poveiros to “fight fascism.” On the other hand, in Plaza D. João I, dozens of ultranationalists from Group 1143, led by neo-Nazi Mario Machado, held a protest under the slogan “Less immigration, more housing.” In the middle of PSP. The first moment of violence occurred when a woman began filming far-right protesters, which led to attempted attacks by young men with their faces covered and other men appearing to defend the woman. The police intervention was worth it as they forcefully calmed the situation.
A few minutes later, as Mario Machado’s group began to march towards the site of the left-wing protest, there was a new episode of violence with provocations and objects being thrown at the column of neo-Nazis, including by young people with their faces covered, and further police intervention.
According to Porto’s PSP, despite several moments of tension, no injuries were reported. No one has been arrested either, but at least three people have been identified.
