Everton have been punished by losing a further two points in the English Football League due to financial irregularities, a reason that has already seen the Toffees lose a further six.
At the end of 2023, Liverpool had already been punished with a 10-point loss for failing to comply with Premier League financial rules before the 2021/22 season, a penalty that was reduced to six points on appeal.
Everton have now been convicted of exceeding the £105 million (around €123 million) fee over the three years to 2022/23 allowed by the competition.
The decision was made by an independent English League committee and can be appealed.
The punishment sees Everton drop to 16th place with 27 points, just two points behind first place in the relegation zone, which is currently occupied by Luton Town.
The Toffees say they are facing double sanctions as the first two years of the second penalty are already taken into account in the first penalty, given that the Premier League’s sustainability rules are outdated and do not reflect current inflation.
Everton were not the only team to be punished by dropping points this season in the English league: Nottingham Forest, coached by Portuguese Nuno Espirito Santo, also dropped four points.
The Premier League has also charged Manchester City and Leicester and is investigating Chelsea.
