The collapse of a road wall has cut off access to the historic center of Sintra

A wall collapsed on Monday morning on Rua Consigliere Pedroso, at the entrance to the historic center of Sintra, next to the Lawrence hotel, but there were no reports of human damage, an official municipal civil protection source told Lusa.

According to the National Office of Emergency Management and Civil Protection, the landslide alarm in the Union of Sintra Parishes occurred at 7:48 am and, despite the mobilization of three vehicles and six operational personnel to the site, it was confirmed that it occurred without serious consequences.

“This is a house in relatively good condition, the wall of which has collapsed onto a public road,” municipal vice-president Bruno Parreira (PS) explained to Luse, adding that “there are no reports of injuries, only material damage to the house.” public place.”

The person also in charge of the Municipal Civil Protection Service admitted that at the beginning of the fall of the wall there could have been a “heavy ground problem due to the accumulation of rainwater”, but the municipality confirmed that “the owner had already been notified to proceed with the repair of the wall.”

The wall at Consiglieri Pedroso 23 belongs to the property where the Palácio de Sintra Boutique House operates, which Lusa contacted but was unable to speak to the person responsible at the time.

The mass of earth and the remains of the wall have completely cut off the narrow street in the historical center, next to the Hotel Lawrence, considered the oldest hotel on the Iberian Peninsula, and Bruno Parreira said that work is now underway to clear the road, which will be closed to traffic in the first stage. traffic and is accessible only to pedestrians.”

“The land is at a significant height relative to the road, and we are working to ensure that there is no risk,” the mayor emphasized, pointing out the need to stabilize the embankment after the cleaning and dismantling stage.

“Some form of mechanical containment will be applied, but primary, basic and temporary, and then, in the second stage, the full intervention will be carried out by the owner, who is obliged to repair the wall there,” he emphasized.

According to Bruno Parreira, “the most important thing is that the owner carries out the work to restore the wall and consolidate the land.”

Regarding the opening of this section of the access road to the historical center, the head of the municipal civil protection service repeated that “for vehicular traffic, of course not” at the moment, and “from a pedestrian point of view, probably only tomorrow.” [terça-feira] or later”.

Material damage, in addition to the wall itself, mainly affected public spaces and urban furniture.
