A US judge has sentenced the parents of Ethan Crumbley, the teenager who killed four classmates at a school near Detroit in 2021, the US reported on Tuesday. BBC.
Jennifer Crumbley and James Crumbley were sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison and received a “bonus” for time already served, two years and three months.
The judge says the purpose of the sentence was to “act as a deterrent,” adding that the charges “do not relate to possession of a weapon” but rather to failure to prevent an assault.
He explains that James “characterized himself as a martyr” for having unlimited access to guns and ammunition, but that his wife Jennifer “glorified the use of these weapons” by having a “dispassionate and apathetic” attitude.
James faces four counts of manslaughter, one for each victim. His wife Jennifer was convicted in February. This is a historic decision by the American justice system, which has never convicted the shooter’s parents.
Son Ethan pleaded guilty in 2022 to four counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole in December. He killed four classmates: Hana St. Juliana, 14, Tate Myra, 16, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Justin Schilling, also 17.
James and Jennifer Crumbley were banned from having any contact with the families of the four shooting victims. The judge will also make a future order regarding the possibility of contact with her son, Ethan Crumbley.
