Former Benfica and Braga footballer Oscar Benitez was sentenced to five years in prison by an Argentine court on Tuesday for threatening the family of his ex-girlfriend, local press reported.
The former Argentine athlete is also accused of coercion and illegal use of weapons; in addition to defacing, damaging the computer and disobedience, for deleting information on the family tablet.
The former player also had a restraining order, which he breached last year when he spray-painted the tires of his former father-in-law’s car before attacking the man.
Anabelia Ayala, the player’s ex-girlfriend, committed suicide on December 31, 2023. The victim’s father says his daughter told him she “couldn’t take it anymore.”
“She was so abused that she didn’t tell us because she was afraid he would attack us. She did it to protect us, I think she couldn’t handle the pressure anymore,” Anabelia’s father said.
Juan Carlos Alaïa spoke to reporters and reported on the aggressive behavior of his daughter’s ex-partner. “He entered my house and attacked me. He hit me with a knife,” Anabelia’s father said.
An investigation has also been launched to find out the reason that led to the victim’s suicide.
Benitez was at Braga on loan from Benfica but never played for the Eagles despite being linked with the Reds for several years. He also played for Argentine teams Boca Juniors and Lanus.
