Nike has come under fire in recent days after announcing the gear that North American athletes will wear at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The biggest chorus of disapproval comes from athletes who think the clothing is too revealing and sexist.
“Professional athletes should be able to compete without worrying about their private parts or any part of their body being exposed. Women’s equipment should serve their performance, mentally and physically. If these clothes were truly good for sports, women-men would wear them too,” wrote Lauren Fleshman, the 2006 and 2010 U.S. 500-meter champion.
The images released by the North American company show very short shorts. “This is not elite sports equipment. These are clothes born of patriarchal forces that are not needed to attract attention to women’s sports.”
In recent years, controversy has grown over clothing worn differently by women. From beach volleyball to gymnastics, which has led to changes in some of the rules in this sport.
At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Germany’s women’s gymnastics team wore long equipment in what they said was a response to sexualization in the sport. Last week, New Zealand changed its rules to allow women to wear shorts or leggings under their competition uniform.
Faced with the controversy, Nike responded in a statement sent to Reuters and said it would provide athletes with other options.
