The list of the seven most endangered monuments and sites in Europe in 2024 includes the Cyclades islands in Greece and three buildings in Turkey and Italy damaged by the February 2023 earthquake, the organization announced this Wednesday.
A statement released by Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute said the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in Altinozu, Turkey, and the Iron Gate of Antioch in Antakya are on the list of heritage in danger. . Both were damaged by the earthquake on February 6 last year.
The Siena Synagogue in Italy, which already has an approved restoration project but is seeking additional funding, was also damaged by the earthquake and is now included in the list of the seven most endangered monuments and sites in Europe.
In Italy, the list also includes the Church of San Pietro in Milan, which is “in rapid decline, with the subsequent loss of parts of 15th-century paintings.”
The list also includes workers’ housing at Chur in France, built in the 19th century to house workers from that country’s “vibrant textile hub” and of which only a few examples remain “still inhabited and, to some extent, in good condition “condition” but are threatened by the municipality’s intention to demolish them as part of a new urban renewal plan.
The organization also listed the Yugoslav People’s Army House in Serbia, built in 1962, which was once a “vibrant cultural and popular center” but is now in need of restoration work, especially on the roof.
The Cyclades Islands, whose archipelago consists of 220 islands, are said to be “at risk of losing their exceptional and authentic character as the growth of tourism-oriented development threatens to eclipse their inherent appeal.”
“Of particular concern are the smaller islands of the Cyclades, which bear the greatest burden of overtourism. Pressure on infrastructure and exponential demand for housing pose significant challenges. The demand for new construction has reached unprecedented levels,” he added to the organization.
Seven sites are eligible for support of 10 thousand euros each from the European Investment Bank and can now receive technical support from Europa Nostra and its partners for rehabilitation processes.
