This Thursday, Benfica tries to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League in a game in which they will take on Marseille away from home with a 2-1 lead in the first leg at the Estádio da Luz.
The Reds, European champions in the 1960/61 and 1961/62 seasons, were finalists in the Europa League twice – in 2012/13 (Chelsea) and 2013/14 (Sevilla) and once in the previous UEFA Cup – in 1982/83 . (two-handed, with Anderlecht).
With distant chances in the league and away from the Portuguese Cup, the Europa League has become Benfica’s main competition at the end of the season as they attempt to reach the semi-finals of European competition for the 15th time.
In the first leg, Benfica won thanks to goals from Rafa (16 minutes) and Di Maria (52), while Marseille scored from Aubameyang (67).
If they manage to qualify, the Reds will face the winner of the Atalanta v Liverpool match, which will be good news for the Italians, who won the first game 3-0 at Anfield Road.
The game this Thursday in Marseille, at the Stade Vélodrome, will start at 21:00 local time (20:00 Lisbon time), and the German Felix Zweier will be the referee.
