Two girls, aged 6 and 11, were injured in a knife attack near a school in France. The attacker was detained

Two girls, aged 6 and 11, were wounded today in a knife attack outside their school in Suffelweiersheim, France, but the attacker was detained by authorities who do not yet suspect a terrorist motive.

The girls were treated by emergency services for superficial injuries, a source close to the investigation said, quoted by French news agency AFP.

The attack took place during the day in Suffelweiersheim, north of Strasbourg, and early investigations indicate it was carried out by a 29-year-old man already in custody.

The older girl was attacked first near the school, and then the younger one was attacked in a nearby square, where a few minutes later the attacker was detained by the police.

The man, who was previously unknown to police, was taken into custody and is suspected of mental disorders, a source in the investigation said, quoted by the French news portal BFM.

The same source added that there is no evidence that the attack was a terrorist attack, so the investigation is focusing on the profile of the suspect.

“A medical and psychological department has already been installed at the school,” the chairman of the local municipal council said in a statement.
