The former President of the Republic, Anibal Cavaco Silva, asked this Thursday to allow the current leader of the PSD/CDZ to govern the country and subsequently to analyze what he has done in comparison with the promises of the election campaign.
The former head of state and former PSD leader spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the launch of Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas’ book entitled “Leading with the People” at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
Asked whether the current government could benefit from reading the book, Cavaco Silva replied: “I have said on another occasion that I am not commenting on a government that has only been fully functional for six days since last Saturday.”
“Let him rule. Then analyze and evaluate. Then look at what he has done in comparison to the promises made during the election campaign and in relation to the behavior of the opposition,” he defended.
Cavaco Silva was also asked how he assessed the recent stance of previous Social Democratic Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho.
“About Dr. Passos Coelho, I described in detail in my memoirs the decisive contribution he made as Prime Minister to lifting Portugal out of bankruptcy, which was placed in such a situation by the Socialist government. As for everything else, I don’t read the books, I haven’t heard what was said, and I’m not in the habit of making comments based solely on media headlines,” he replied.
The former President of the Republic began by saying that he had already read the book by the engineer Carlos Moedas, praising him.
“This is a very interesting book about solving people’s problems, concrete problems, and not about political tactics. And I must say that I learned a lot about the city of Lisbon. I have improved my knowledge of what has been done in the city of Lisbon. why am I here,” he said.
The presentation of the book by Carlos Moedas took place in front of a hall full of various figures of national politics, such as the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the former leader of the PSD, Manuela Ferreira Leite, the Social Democratic Party founder and former Prime Minister Francisco Pinto Balseman, current ministers such as António Leitán Amaro, Nuno Melo, Miguel Pinto Luz, Pedro Reis or Margarida Balseiro López, as well as figures such as Lisbon patriarch Rui Valeriu, musician and composer Rui. Massena (who performed the piece live) or artists Tony Carreira and Luis Represas.
