Four Portuguese compete on the first day of the European Paralympic Swimming Championships

This Sunday, four Portuguese athletes will compete on the first day of the European Open Para Swimming Championships, which will bring together 427 swimmers from 51 countries in Funchal.

In the morning, Daniel Videira swims the 100m backstroke S6, Diogo Cancela competes in the 400m freestyle S8, Tomas Cordeiro swims the 100m breaststroke S10, and Marco Meneses swims the 50m freestyle S11.

If they manage to qualify, the Portuguese swimmers will advance to the final of their event from 5:30 p.m.

At the Olympic Swimming Pool Complex in Funchal, where the competition will continue until Saturday, Portugal will be represented by six swimmers: five men and one woman.

The competition, which has an open category and is therefore open to swimmers from non-European countries, takes on particular importance in the rankings that will determine the nominal distribution of quotas for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, which will take place from August 28 to September 8. .

At the 2021 European Championships, which will also be held in Funchal, Portugal won three medals, including Susana Veiga (two), who was part of the Portuguese delegation, and Renata Pinto, who will not be present this year.

In Paralympic swimming, swimmers with musculoskeletal disorders are grouped into different styles according to their functional abilities through assessment of muscle strength, coordination and movement limitations.

The class number is preceded by the letter S (Swimming), with classes S1 to S10 grouping swimmers with physical and motor disabilities, classes 11 to 13 grouping swimmers with visual impairments, and class S14 exclusively for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
