This Monday, the Left Bloc considered it a priority to criminalize money transfers “to and from tax havens” and submitted proposals to the government to establish the crime of unjust enrichment, overcoming possible problems of constitutionality.
These directions of action were conveyed to journalists by the parliamentary leader of the blockers, Fabian Figueiredo, following a meeting with the Minister of Justice Rita Judice as part of parliamentary hearings of the government with parties on taking measures to combat corruption. within 60 days.
“We have presented our roadmap for priority action, creating the crime of unjust enrichment, to overcome the constitutional problems of the past. We need this legal instrument to ensure that whoever does not comply with their declaratory obligations, whoever has enrichment that does not justify it, is criminalized,” he said.
Regarding the issue of unjust enrichment, the parliamentary leader of the Left Bloc said that he has provided Minister Rita Judice with a “legislative road map” with which this party believes it is possible to solve the problems already raised by the Constitutional Court.
Further, the president of the parliamentary group of the Left Bloc emphasized that Portugal “must act against” tax havens, “offshores.”
“Offshores are the center of financial crimes. There is not a single national or international financial scandal that does not involve offshore companies. Portugal must prohibit the transfer of capital to and from offshore tax havens and must have legal tools to ensure that financial piracy does not infect our economy and our political power,” he said.
In front of reporters, Fabian Figueiredo also said that he told the Minister of Justice that “it is necessary to put into operation the Transparency Authority.”
“It is very important that the statements of civil servants and persons holding political positions are controlled, and there are about 19 thousand of them. Therefore, we need a Transparency Authority that has technical and legal means,” he noted.
Around these anti-corruption topics, according to parliamentary leader of the Bloc de Esquerda, it is believed that political consensus can be reached. And the blockers say they are ready to do this.
In the first part of this round of hearings, which began on Friday and is taking place in the Assembly of the Republic, the Minister of Justice received PAN, SDP, PS and Chegu.
