Benfica coach Roger Schmidt this Monday challenged the protests and insults expressed by the Red fans in the victory over Farense (3-1) in the 30th round of the I Football League, asking them to “stay at home”.
“I’m not happy with the fans. In my opinion, this is too much. I understand that not everyone is happy, that sometimes we also lose games and miss opportunities. But in my opinion, my players give everything for Benfica and they don’t deserve to be attacked and bullied,” the German coach said at a press conference after the game at the San Luis Stadium in Faro.
During and at the end of the match, fans expressed protests and insults directed at Reds players Roger Schmidt, as well as Benfica president Rui Costa.
“Such a reaction is unacceptable. It’s very exaggerated. For me they are not Benfica fans. If they behave like this after our victory – as they already did in the home victory over Marseille. [2-1 para a Liga Europa]“What they reacted to, sending the team with such a feeling to an important return match is not good for Benfica,” he said.
Roger Schmidt felt that Benfica did not need such fans and asked them to stay at home.
“I can’t change it. We need fans who support us, who love Benfica, we don’t need fans like that. I hope they stay at home,” he concluded.
After the 30th round, Benfica is second in Liga I with 73 points, seven points behind leaders Sporting, who beat Vitoria de Guimarães 3-0 on Sunday, with 12 points remaining.
