Iran announced the release of the crew of a ship flying the Portuguese flag

Iran’s foreign minister announced the early release of crew members of various nationalities from a Portuguese-flagged ship with ties to Israel seized on April 13 by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in the Persian Gulf.

“The humanitarian issue of the release of the ship’s crew seriously worries us,” Hossein Amir Abdolahian said during a telephone conversation with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported on Friday.

Lusa tried to confirm this information with the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, awaiting a response.

Iran’s diplomatic chief said he had granted consular access to the cargo ship’s 25 crew members, adding that they were expected to be released.

Iran seized a ship linked to Israel as it expected a response to the April 1 attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria, attributed to Tel Aviv, that killed seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including three generals.

Hours after the container ship was hijacked, Tehran launched a counter-offensive using hundreds of missiles and drones against Israeli territory.

Tehran regularly seizes oil tankers and cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.

On January 11, another ship was boarded in the Sea of Oman and transferred to Iranian waters.
