“I hope to meet your demands: to win, to win titles, to prepare a new cycle of victories and a financially sustainable club,” André Villas-Boas wrote this Sunday in his first social media post as elected president of Porto. “The victory was only possible thanks to the massive support of FC Porto members, fans and supporters in Portugal and abroad! It was your strength that gave me the energy and confidence to bring glory to our club in such a special way,” he added.
In a short statement to reporters during lunch yesterday, Villas-Boas confirmed that Pinto da Costa had called him. “He congratulated me and invited me to be present at the presidential rostrum [no clássico de ontem]but at this stage I think it makes sense to be closer to my teammates [nas bancadas], at least for the last time. Thanking him for the invitation, for the congratulations, it is a message of strength for Porto, it is important to feel that we are all united,” said Villas-Boas, reinforcing the recognition of Pinto da Costa’s gesture: “It was an act of elevation and affection from the side President, and I thanked him equally for all the respect I have for him.”
Villas-Boas also confirmed that this Sunday afternoon the date of the inauguration has not yet been determined. The Charter specifies that new members of the governing bodies must take up their respective positions within a maximum of 15 days after the election, in this particular case by 12 May. Villas-Boas has made it clear more than once that his team intends to “get their hands dirty” as quickly as possible. Moreover, this step depends on the appointment of elections for the new administration of the SAD, the body that effectively manages professional football.
Pending determination, Villas-Boas spent yesterday at home with his family and then watched the Sporting game in his annual video. During the day, he was congratulated by several football directors, namely the presidents of the FPF and the League (Fernando Gomes and Pedro Proença respectively). Frederico Varandas – Sporting’s president even called Pinto da Costa a “criminal” – sent a message to Villas-Boas.
Applause before the game and at the 42nd minute
Yesterday, before the classic match, Pinto da Costa was applauded by Dragan fans, including Andre Villas-Boas. Also in the 42nd minute (how many years he was president of Porto), the ovation was repeated, and even Sergio Conceicao turned to the podium.
