This Monday, the European Parliament launched a video urging people to vote in the next European elections, focusing on the importance of defending democracy: “Use your vote, or others will decide for you.”
The video features testimonies from grandparents who want to tell their grandchildren and all generations who grew up in Europe without war that democracy should not be taken for granted.
Memories of Europe plunged into World War II prompted these grandparents from different countries (France, Czech Republic, Romania, Germany, Italy and Latvia) to share with their grandchildren: “You know, I was born in the year when the world was burning. It has a big impact on your life. Fortunately, you were born in a time of peace and prosperity. Remember that freedom and democracy have not always existed and that we can quickly lose them.”
“You have to fight to win it, always be alert and fight for it. Long live democracy,” the grandparents ask.
At the video launch, Roberta Metsola, the current President of the European Parliament, said that “the democracy of the European Union is more important today than ever”: “Every vote counts in deciding which direction our Union will take in the next five years.” ” Finally, he turned to slogan from the video: “So that no one chooses for us, we must vote.”
From 6 to 9 June, more than 370,000 citizens from 27 EU member states were called to the polls. In Portugal, elections will be held on Sunday, June 9, with the novelty that you can vote at any polling station in the country, not limited to your area of residence.
