Madeira recorded 1,747 births and 2,787 deaths last year, representing declines of 0.6% and 10.2% respectively compared to 2022, the Regional Statistical Office (DREM) said on Tuesday.
According to DREM, “the final vital statistics for 2023 indicate a negative natural balance of 1,040 people in the region, due to the number of live births (1,747) being lower than the number of deaths (2,787).”
In 2022, the natural balance was also negative, but more significant (-1345 people): 758 births and 3103 deaths were registered.
According to DREM, of the children born last year in Madeira, 52.8% were male, which also indicates that the majority of births occurred outside of marriage (62.7%).
“On average, mothers living in the region have their first child at 30.5 years old, that is, the same age as in the previous year. At the birth of children (regardless of birth order), mothers were on average 32.3 years old,” – he said. adds.
Madeira, on the other hand, recorded 2,787 deaths last year, 316 fewer than in 2022, with 81.1% of deaths being people 65 years of age or older and 52.6% being people 80 years of age or older .
The regional statistics office clarifies that 49% of deaths were men and 51% women, emphasizing that “since the beginning of the century, only after 2010 the number of deaths of women began to exceed the number of deaths of men, with the exception of 2016.”
Last year, the death of a child under 1 year of age was recorded, while in 2022 there were three, and five intrauterine deaths of mothers, which is two less than in the previous year.
The number of weddings held in the archipelago in 2023 (1,137) represents a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to the previous year (1,139), according to data released on Tuesday.
Of the total number of marriages that occurred during this period, 94.6% were between people of the opposite sex, and the remaining 5.4% were between people of the same sex.
DREM highlights that “the number of marriages between people of the same sex, both men and women, is the highest since this method was allowed in the civil registry in 2010.”
