Business workers are on strike today, demanding higher wages and career advancement, denouncing the hectic pace and irregular work schedules.
The strike was called by two trade unions representing the sector, associated with CGTP and UGT.
CESP – The Union of Trade, Office and Service Workers of Portugal (CGTP) said in a statement that these workers have “stressful and unregulated working hours”, working up to 18 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays.
According to the union, businesses should close on all national holidays, as well as on Sundays and from 22:00.
Workers are also demanding a reduction in working hours to 35 hours a week.
“The wages and careers of trade workers cannot continue to lose purchasing power – we demand an end to professional stagnation and the renewal of wages in collective labor agreements without loss of rights,” he emphasized.
The UGT’s Union of Services Workers (Sitese) also called a strike today, covering workers in the trade, office and service sectors, especially in companies belonging to the Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies (APED).
The sector demands respect for International Workers’ Day and challenges the precarious nature of employment and working hours.
Workers are also demanding higher wages and respect for collective bargaining.
