From this Thursday, fishermen will be able to return to fishing for sardines in Portugal with a maximum annual limit of 29,560 tons, more than 66% of the quota allocated in the Iberian Peninsula.
“Sardine fishing will resume from 00:00 on May 2, 2024,” the government determined in a decree published in the Diário da República.
The sardine fishery is operated jointly by Portugal and Spain under a multi-year plan for the period 2021-2026.
For 2024, the fishing campaign envisages a catch limit of 44,450 tonnes, with Portugal accounting for 66.5% of this (29,560 tonnes).
The diploma, signed by Agriculture and Fisheries Minister José Manuel Fernandez, also sets daily limits for the landing and sale of sardines.
For vessels with an overall length of less than nine meters, the limit is 2,700 kilograms (kg) or 120 baskets, if applicable.
Vessels over nine meters and under 16 meters in length are, in turn, limited to 6,750 kg or 300 baskets.
On national holidays, the fishing, storage on board, landing or sale of sardines is prohibited.
Rescheduling an auction other than “corresponding to the unloading port” is also prohibited, similar to the possibility of unloading a ship in more than one port during each day.
