Portugal rugby team dies in car crash in France

Portuguese rugby international Pierre-Mathieu Fernandes died this Saturday in France at the age of 22 as a result of a road accident, his club said in a statement. The information was confirmed moments later by the Portuguese Rugby Federation (FPR).

“It is with deep sadness and great worry that we learned this morning of the death of one of our players, Pierre-Mathieu Fernandes, in a traffic accident. Pierre-Mathieu was only 22 years old,” Vienne wrote, without going into details. .

In addition to already playing for the first team, Fernandes became European Rugby Vice-Champion with Portugal in 2021.

“FPR expresses its most sincere condolences to Pierre’s entire family and thanks them for their contribution to the sport,” the organization wrote in a condolence message published on its official channels.

Trained in Clermont, the Portuguese-born player currently plays for Vienne rugby in the National Championship 1, France’s third division, after playing for Chambery last season.
