The number of MPs in the new European Parliament will increase from 705 to 720, with Portugal still being represented by 21 after the June 9 elections. But at the end of the day, how much does an MEP earn?
The gross salary is set at 10,075.42 euros per month, which is 7,853.89 euros net, reports euronews. Most EU Member States impose an additional national tax.
Manage expenses with computers, telephones, conference arrangements, income and office supplies, MEPs receive allowances paid directly into their personal bank accounts and are not required to disclose how they spent the money.
When they leave their position, they will receive a subsidy equivalent to one month’s salary for each year in office for a maximum period of two years until they transfer to another position.
Reimbursement of travel expenses for meetings of the European Parliament, subject to presentation of receipts, can reach a maximum annual amount of €4,940 for activities outside the country of origin.
For each day in Brussels, MEPs receive a flat allowance of 350 euros to cover the cost of accommodation and food.
The budget for the recruitment and salary of personal assistants is €28,696 per month, but close family members are not allowed.
The medical expenses of all members of the European Parliament are reimbursed by two-thirds.
The pension at age 63 is financed from the European Union budget and is equal to 3.5% of salary for each full year of work, but in general cannot exceed 70%.
