This Tuesday, neo-Nazi activist Mario Machado hears his verdict in a case in which he is accused of inciting hatred and violence against left-wing women in social media posts directed against MAS leader Renata Cambra.
The verdict will be read at 3:30 pm at Lisbon’s local criminal court, Campus Justice, after the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) called for an effective prison sentence for Mario Machado in closing arguments in April.
As for the other person involved in the case, Ricardo Pais, accused of the same crime for messages on the old Twitter (now X), in which he called for the rape of left-wing women, the deputy at today’s meeting considered that “given the suspended sentence”, since he has a criminal record.
At issue in this trial are messages published on Twitter at the time, attributed to Mario Machado and Ricardo Pais, in which they called for the “forced prostitution” of women from left-wing parties and which were directed in particular against a teacher and leader of the Socialist Alternative. Movement (MAS) Renata Cambra.
The deputy understands that “the accused must be convicted,” emphasizing that Ricardo Pais’ suspended sentence could range from six months to five years in prison.
In relation to Mario Machado, it is stated that he will be sentenced to an effective sentence of more than six months for repeat offences.
In court, García Pereira, Renata Cambra’s agent, defended an effective prison sentence for the two defendants, holding that they had engaged in “threatening behavior” that “exceeds all socially acceptable limits.”
García Pereira also accused Mario Machado and Ricardo Pais of “lack of courage to admit authorship” of the Twitter posts.
