On Tuesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAD) rejected Sporting’s appeal against a fine imposed over comments made by former footballer Carlos Xavier against Iranian Porto striker Mehdi Taremi.
This is a fine imposed by the Disciplinary Council (CD) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on the Leonin club following discriminatory remarks by a former footballer against the striker on Sporting TV.
“The defendant’s disciplinary authority worked well, [a FPF] having decided administratively what he decided,” can be read in the ruling to which Lusa had access today.
Thus, TAD “considers this arbitration claim” against the FPF due to the fine of 15,300 euros imposed by the Disciplinary Council in October 2023 to be unfounded.
In September, Carlos Xavier apologized to Taremi for these statements, denying that the intentions were “xenophobic or racist”.
Carlos Xavier’s statements in the previous comment space about the Dragons striker had already drawn criticism from the then president of FC Porto, Pinto da Costa, as well as from the Iranian Football Federation.
“There was a former player who on the sports channel called our Taremi a “Muslim,” “a Muslim who couldn’t swim and now only knows how to dive.” How does the channel allow this? don’t know if SOS Racismo or other organizations or ERC will react [Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social]. If he kissed a woman, it would be a scandal, but the rest is worth it,” said the then leader of the “dragons”.
