AstraZeneca to withdraw COVID-19 vaccine from market due to rare side effect

The Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine is being withdrawn from the market around the world, months after the pharmaceutical company admitted for the first time in court papers that the vaccine may cause a rare and dangerous side effect that in turn causes blood clots and low blood pressure. platelet count.

The documents indicate that in very rare cases it can cause thrombosis.

In accordance with Telegraph, the vaccine can no longer be used in the European Union after the company voluntarily revoked its “marketing authorization.” The vaccine recall request was made on March 5 and took effect on Tuesday.

In the coming months, similar applications will be filed in the UK and other countries that have approved the vaccine, known as Vaxevria.

The decision to withdraw the vaccine ends use of a vaccine that Boris Johnson has hailed as a “triumph for British science” and has saved more than six million lives.

According to the same source, AstraZeneca said the vaccine was being withdrawn from markets for commercial reasons, citing that it was no longer produced or supplied but had been replaced by updated vaccines that combat new variants.

The disease is linked to at least 81 deaths in the UK, as well as hundreds of serious injuries. More than 50 alleged victims and grieving family members are suing AstraZeneca in the High Court.
