The Episcopal Commission on Christian Education and Doctrine of Faith (CEECDF) expressed this Wednesday’s desire that parents, “as the first educators” of their children, be able to choose the school of their choice “without financial or other obstacles.”
In a message to mark the 25th anniversary of the Portuguese Association of Catholic Schools (APEC), which will be celebrated on Thursday, the bishops who are part of the Commission believe that in a “not always favorable scenario” this is of utmost importance for Catholic schools. “live intensely your identity and mission and adapt it to a changing world, largely secularized and with many problems.”
“It is necessary to promote the harmonious interaction of all educational subjects of the Catholic school in interaction with the ecclesiastical reality, but also with the surrounding social reality and, without forgetting the defining responsibility of the state in matters of freedom and subsidiarity – the political reality in the construction of the Global Pact for Education, which Pope Francis persistently (…) spoke,” the bishops say in a text published this Wednesday.
On the other hand, the message highlights “the good that APEC has done in this quarter century: as an ecclesial reality in the path of evangelization and in promoting the identity and mission of Catholic schools; in encouraging communication, exchange and cooperation.” , synergy generator; in promoting freedom of education so that schools, while ‘Catholic’, are open to all, privileging the most vulnerable.”
It also emphasizes the association’s role “in collaborating with families to create the educational project they desire for their children; education system and school network, filling gaps and establishing a distinctive, irreplaceable and highly sought-after brand.”
As part of the celebration of APEC’s 25th anniversary, the association, together with the National Secretariat of Christian Education (SNEC), will host the II National Congress of Catholic Schools in Fatima on October 10 and 11.
APEC represents 127 educational institutions, with approximately 70 thousand students, 5,500 teachers and 3,500 non-teaching staff.
