The Red Cross has initiated the creation of an advanced medical post that will receive patients transferred to the Ponta Delgada health center after the fire at the Divino Espirito Santo Santo Hospital (HDES) on Friday.
Speaking to reporters, facility spokeswoman Manuela Filipe said the advanced medical post installed in the Escola Mãe de Deus school’s gym “will allow the Red Cross to receive the 34 patients” to whom they were hospitalized in record time. to a hospital in Ponta Delgada and had to be transferred to a medical center after a fire broke out on Saturday at the HDES on the island of São Miguel.
The fire, which broke out at the Ponta Delgada hospital on Saturday at 9:40 local time (10:40 Lisbon time) and was declared extinguished only at 16:11, forced the transfer of all hospitalized patients.
At the time of the fire, there were 333 patients in the medical facility, and 240 had to be transferred to various units on the island of São Miguel, including a private hospital in Lagoa, hospitals on the islands of Terceira and Faial and in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Manuela Filipe, who spoke to reporters near the site of the advanced medical post, emphasized “the speed with which the Red Cross created these facilities,” congratulating herself on the fact that there was “perfect harmony” between government agencies. , national headquarters and local authorities.”

Regional emergency coordinator Armando Almeida said the care that will be provided at the frontline medical post “is what would normally be provided in a hospital setting,” but that these are not wards.
But, he said, “safe medical care will be provided by hospital specialists” in Ponta Delgada.
The frontline medical post will also be staffed by 12 Red Cross staff, although not permanently, and the facility “will remain available for as long as needed.”
