Bredewold wins for the second consecutive time and reinforces his leadership in Itzulia

Mischa Bredewold (SD Works-Protime) won the second stage of the Itzulia Women 2024 and reinforced his lead at the top of the general classification. The Dutch added his second consecutive victoryand also won in the first stage.

The runners faced a 104-kilometer route starting and ending in Basauri. There were several attacks and escape attempts from the beginning of the stage, although the peloton did not give permission for any escape to form. The pace of the stage was very lively, the peloton remained mostly grouped together, although some cyclists were cut off from the main group.

The peloton and the race broke up with 37.5 kilometers to go. On the ascent to Urruztigaina Niamh Fisher-Black (SD Works) picked up the pace and tore the main group to pieces. In addition, 400 meters from the top of Urruztigaina attacked Demi Vollering (SD Works-Protime) and the Dutchwoman was left alone at the head of the race. Later, on the descent from the pass, Vollering was joined by her teammate Marlen Reusser (SD Works-Protime) and Elise Chabbey (Canyon-SRAM Racing).

After covering a few more kilometers, the leading trio was joined by five other runners: Juliette Labous (DSM-firmenich PostNL), Evita Muzic (FDJ-Suez), Pauliena Rooijakkers (Fenix-Deceuninck), Mavi Garcia (Liv AlUla Jayco) and Ricarda Bauernfeind (Canyon-SRAM Racing).

With 16 kilometers to go, the leading group was joined by a platoon of about 30 units in which the leader was Mischa Bredewold and the basque Ane Santesteban (Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi) among others.

It seemed that the stage was going to be decided in the sprint among a large group. However, In the final kilometers Labous attacked and broke the main group. Mavi García and Bredewold went for it and the three of them rode at the head of the race, gaining more and more advantage over the peloton.

Thus, the trio sprinted to win the stage. Bredewold was the best in the final meters, García was second and Labous third. The peloton crossed the finish line four seconds behind the winner.

In that way, heThe general classification continues to be led by Mischa Bredewold. The leader He has a 15-second advantage over Mavi García which is second, leads Juliette Labous by 16 seconds which is third and has a 20 second rena on Demi Vollering which occupies fourth place overall.
