Roger Schmidt laid out a plan, and the Benfica side followed suit: an easy win (despite initial fear) and a near-total savings for the usual starting eleven, thinking of Tuesday’s Champions League game against PSG in Paris.

This was the first game in which the German coach made significant changes to the starting line-up. Gilberto, Ristic (debut as a title player), Orsnes, Draxler and Diogo Gonçalves added freshness. The panic over the first goal by Rio Ave did not deprive Benfica of their insight, which accumulated dangerous applications, to a draw.

After an excellent collective game, Goncalo Ramos equalized the score. Shortly thereafter, a gift from Jonathan paid tribute to the marker with a somersault as a result.

Benfica didn’t concede either Rafa or Neres, not least because Enzo, Joao Mario and Goncalo Ramos played flawlessly in the first half. The 3-1 score was close to halftime with a new perfect rapport between the Eagles: Enzo discovers Ramos, who gets hit with a hip and a left leg shot.

The film of the first half could be summed up with a goal by Rio Ave, and then by a constant and suffocating presence, embodied in the opponent’s midfield, who simply did not score more goals due to the sheer inefficiency of the attack.

Schmidt eliminated Ramos and Enzo at half-time and Rio Ave moved up the lead. Benfica took control, but now with fewer arrivals in the opponent’s zone. Still, the dim-witted Draxler had a good chance of making the fourth, but he shot to the side. Already after an hour of play the score was 4-1. Mousa makes his debut to score for the Eagles after a pass from Ristic (a good Serb performance, launched for the first time as a starter).

From that moment on, the pace dropped even further and Benfica may have already considered playing in the millionaires’ league. Until the very end, Schmidt would come back to renew (only Odysseas, António Silva and Otamendi – among the regular starters – played all the time), and Rio Ave ended up reducing the Googie captain’s goal, with no chance for Odysseas.

A clear triumph for a championship leader with so few missed opportunities. It was Benfica’s fourth comeback this season, ahead of a trip to France to play PSG, a week after a 1-1 draw against Luz.

Ristic opened up to the Benfica fans and showed a very positive performance, which turned out to be a good option for Grimaldo. Diogo Gonçalves also had an opportunity and helped create several opportunities. Orsnes again gave good instructions.

The goal that will rule the world
– The move that allowed Benfica to turn around will go to Mundo. Jonathan ridiculously failed to get the ball into his own net. A serious mistake and four goals conceded are not in their favor, despite the fact that they have avoided so many goals.

No problem
A calm day, no problems and no business for Manuel Oliveira. In a game in which assistants always helped, the Porto referee took off a yellow card three times and always with good reason.
