Benfica scored on Sunday, but a challenge to the coach, at least from some of the fans, did not stop them from striking. In the end, Schmidt admitted that he would leave Benfica if the situation did not change.
“These people have received a lot of attention. In such circumstances, we cannot be champions. It is impossible. Therefore, if the decision is for me to leave, we must talk about it,” he said in the press room.
The coach chose to praise the majority supporting the team.
“We have to focus on other fans, Benfica fans, men, women, boys, girls, grandparents. These are Benfica fans, not those people. In this game they showed it, in This is a good way. This is the solution. We need to see how we can see that support,” said Schmidt, who was the target of the No Name Boys protest.
Fans demanded the coach’s departure with insults, placards and throwing torches onto the field.
