Pedro Proenza says goal line technology strengthens protection of sports truth

Goal Line Technology (GLT) will strengthen the tools for the protection of sporting truth in the I League, starting from the 2025/26 season, the President of the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) said today.

“This is another tool to help protect the truth in sports. When we want this to happen, there will be few tools to help officiating teams and structures make better decisions. This is the responsibility of the regulator and the role of the LPFP,” Pedro Proenza told reporters.

The director was speaking at the opening of the first site of the Footpark project in Senhora da Ora, Matosinhos, on the day the LPFP management approved the adoption of GLT to evaluate goal attempts, a source connected with the process revealed to the Lusa agency.

“This is work that the LPFP began in the 2020/21 season and was the result of the collaboration of many people from clubs belonging to the professional ranks. Today, at a management meeting, it was decided that the implementation phase will begin next season.” And the testing process. After the video referee (VAR), the GLT arrives,” he noted.

The LPFP will issue an open tender for proposals for the provision of this service, under the supervision of the organization’s chief executive Helena Pires, the clubs and the Portuguese Football Federation.

“Technology is being introduced and better and better conditions are being created for protecting the truth in sports. We are satisfied. This process had to be well thought out and today we are ready to carry out the implementation phase next season so that we have GLT adopted from July 1, 2025,” concluded Pedro Proença.

The English league was a pioneer in the use of this technology in 2013, and it has already been implemented in the major championships of Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands or in international competitions including the Champions League or the World Cup and the European Championship.
