A 44-year-old man was arrested in Leiria on suspicion of assaulting and threatening his 38-year-old partner in the presence of their minor daughter, Public Security Police (PSP) said on Tuesday.
In a statement, PSP said it was contacted on Sunday by a citizen who, while traveling in his vehicle accompanied by his family, “observed that he was following another vehicle behind his and was persistently honking his horn, so he stopped.” coincidentally, in front of the garage and the residence of the detainee.”
According to the Leiria PSP district office, the citizen, when interrogating the suspect, “immediately made several offensive expressions, threats, and then locked himself in his house.”
“Already on the spot, the police heard the victim’s cries for help,” the statement says, adding that “their daughter managed to go outside, handing over to the police the machete that the attacker had.”
Calling upon the suspect’s common sense to open the door, he did so, leading to his arrest.
The PSP explained that “there are no known further incidents of domestic or other violence” against the suspect, who required identification and residence permits.
