Turkish football championship games postponed due to earthquake that shook the country

This Monday’s games in the Turkish Super League, including the reception of Fenerbahçe led by Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus to Konyaspor, have been postponed due to the earthquake that hit the country, the Turkish Federation said.

“In view of the loss of life, injuries and ongoing search and rescue efforts as a result of the earthquake felt in many provinces of which Karamamaras is the epicenter, and especially in Hatay, Gaziantep, Adana, Osmaniye, Diyarbakir, Malatya and Sanlıurfa. […]this Monday’s games have been rescheduled,” the Football Federation said in a statement, adding that the same would happen for games at other levels on Wednesday.

This Monday, the Turkish championship provided for the completion of the 16th round with the games Umraniyespor-Adana Demirspor, Giresunspor-Kayserispor and Feberbahce-Konyaspor.

The earthquake struck at 4:17 (1:17 in Lisbon) 33 km from the provincial capital of Gaziantep in southeastern Turkey at a depth of 17.9 km.

A magnitude 7.8 quake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday and killed at least 1,400 people and destroyed hundreds of buildings, according to preliminary balance sheets cited by the Associated Press.

According to official sources in both countries, hundreds of people are still under the rubble, thus fearing that the death toll will be much higher.
