Manchester City, the two-time English football champions, will have to answer to the English League’s independent commission for multiple breaches of financial regulations between 2009 and 2018, the body said on Monday.
The Premier League has referred alleged irregularities to an independent panel, which include failures in mandatory financial detail, such as remuneration of players and members of the Spaniard Pep Guardiola’s technical team, as well as failures to comply with financial fair play rules.
This type of committee operates independently of the English League and its affiliated clubs. Its members will be appointed by the independent chairman of the Premier League Judiciary and all proceedings will be private and confidential.
The period covered covers the 2009/10 to 2017/18 seasons, the first nine seasons Manchester City spent under Abu Dhabi Sovereign Wealth Fund ownership, during which the City won three English Premier League titles, in 2012, 2014 and 2018.
Manchester City, who finished second in the English league in 2022/23 behind Arsenal, have one of the most valuable squads in world football, with three Portuguese internationals under contract: Joao Cancelo, who was loaned to Bayern in January , Ruben Dias and Bernard Silva.
In February 2020, UEFA suspended the club from participation in European competitions for a period of two years for violating financial fair play rules, but the sanction was overturned after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July of that year.
