The Socialists also clarified that they do not agree with the planned “rent flexibility”, since they consider “tenant protection to be absolutely necessary.”
“This is the moment when we are unlikely to give up,” he stressed.
Despite the differences, Alexandra Leitan stressed her party’s readiness to discuss a new housing package with the government, especially in terms of simplifying and improving support.
“We are naturally ready to work, to present measures if applicable, and in this sense this is what we told the minister. We are naturally ready. Now we will see what the next steps will be,” he added.
Asked about the possibility of the Socialist Party making viable the Liberal Initiative’s proposal to form a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the Santa Casa da Misericordia case, Alexandra Leitan said the party did not yet have a position, but said there was “no need.” repeat parliamentary commissions of inquiry” so that parliament can conduct a proper investigation.
“We already have one CPI that is potentially moving forward and three that have already been submitted. So I think we need to analyze that as well,” he concluded.
This Thursday morning the government will meet with all parties represented in parliament with a view to including their proposals in the “Building Portugal” housing program.
The program, announced last Friday, includes, among other measures, the creation of a public guarantee aimed at young people buying their first home, a change in the wording of the Porta 65 program and the abolition of the Emergency Local Contribution (CEAL) and the expiration of the license and opportunity transfers. Construir Portugal also aims to “bring back flexibility and confidence to renters and landlords.”
