The Secretary of State for Sports, Pedro Díaz, said this Thursday that the conclusion and presentation of the plan for the sector will be completed and presented in December, which will require a commitment of “at least 12 years”.
“The goal is to complete the sports development plan by December 2024. This is a big task and we will all need to be actively involved. This is the only way we will feel comfortable in the direction we are going,” emphasized a government official at a monthly session organized by the Panathlon Clube de Lisboa.
Pedro Diaz, however, warned that the plan would require an extended “time horizon” of at least 12 years to fully implement.
“Despite the risk that many people will disagree with what I have to say, this plan, in my opinion, requires at least a 12-year commitment. Three Olympic cycles with cyclical and regular updates every two years. Some may say this is too long, but we need this time horizon,” he also emphasized.
Under the theme “Public Policy and Strategy in the Field of Sports”, Pedro Díaz presented the stakes, goals and commitments that the 24th Constitutional Government, elected on March 10, intends to implement in this sector, within the framework of synergies in several areas.
“Out of 17 ministers, 14 will be involved in this plan. Out of 41 secretaries of state, 35 will be involved. This is a long job, but I think it’s worth it,” the official emphasized.
In terms of other objectives of this legislature, emphasis is placed on areas of knowledge, training, qualifications, sport development factors and strengthening the structural and organic coherence of the sector, with four objectives being identified at an overall level.
This is an increase in the sports practice of the population with an emphasis on the 78% who do not have physical activity, reducing the difference between men and women, increasing the “low income” of the female sex, attracting direct investment in sports and indicators. sports practices than the European Union average, trying to increase this figure from 22% to 40%, as well as reduce the level of childhood obesity and overweight.
