Russia has discovered oil reserves equivalent to 511 billion barrels of oil in Antarctica

Russia has discovered huge oil reserves in Antarctica, most of which are located in areas claimed by Britain, the British warn. According to the newspaper Telegraph, The discovered reserves amount to 511 billion barrels of fossil fuels, ten times the North Sea’s total production over 50 years.

The discovery follows a series of explorations carried out by the Alexander Karpinsky vessel, which is operated by Rosgeologiya, the Russian agency responsible for finding mineral reserves for commercial exploration.

Some researchers warn that the research could lead to the arrival of drilling platforms from Moscow to explore the area.

ABOUT Telegraph recalls that Antarctica must be protected by the 1959 Treaty, which prohibits any exploration for minerals or oil. Russia recently reaffirmed its commitment to key elements of this treaty. However, some experts consider it “naive” to believe that Moscow will fulfill its obligations.

“Russia’s actions should be understood as a decision to undermine regulations surrounding seismic exploration and, ultimately, as a harbinger of future resource extraction,” he said. Telegraph Klaus Dodds, Professor of Geopolitics at Royal Holloway College.
