Portugal, through the beach volleyball pairs of João Pedrosa/Hugo Campos and Gonçalo Sousa/Thomas Sousa, has guaranteed its presence in the final stage of the Nations Cup, which qualifies for Paris 2024, this Sunday after winning Group D in Turkey.
The final stage of the Nations Cup will take place from June 13 to 16 in Jurmala (Latvia) and guarantees the winning country a quota for the beach volleyball tournament at the Olympic Games.
The first pair to take the field in the final of Group D of the preliminary round of the Nations Cup were brothers Gonçalo and Tomas Sousa, who beat Poles Maciej Rudol and Filip Lejawa 2-1 with a score of 21-19. 20-22 and 22-20.
After that, João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos maintained their level and won the deciding game, also in the Blacks, with a score of 2-1 against the experienced Polish duo of Piotr Kantor and Jakub Zdybek with scores of 16-21, 21-11 and 15-13.
The Portuguese team’s balance in the competition was three wins in three days against hosts Turkey, Slovenia and Poland, allowing them to take a very important step towards achieving the goal of attending Paris 2024.
The Nations Cup has a unique competition format in which each country is represented by two pairs, and the best of three are played in qualifying matches. The tiebreaker is played in a partial game up to 15 points (“golden set”).
