Marcelo observes, sees, but does not comment on the Chega trial and the dispute with Aguiar-Branco.

The President of the Republic said this Sunday that he observes, sees, but does not comment on Chegi’s failed attempt to bring him to justice for treason against the country, as well as disagreements with Aguiar-Branco and the freedom of speech of deputies.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa referred to the European election period of 9 June and the separation of powers, without saying anything about the process that Chega tried to prosecute for high treason due to his statements about reparations to former colonies in statements to RTP at the end of the Portuguese Cup among women at the Jamor Stadium, Oeiras, Lisbon.

“The President of the Republic, due to the separation of powers, cannot comment on what the Chairman of the Assembly is doing, what the deputies on one side and the other think. Therefore, I observe, I see, but I cannot comment,” he said, answering a question about the decision of the President of Parliament, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, who did not condemn the Chegi leader after Andre Ventura said that the Turks “are not exactly known as the most hardworking people into the world.”

On Friday after the parliamentary incident, in statements to journalists, the President of the Assembly said that it was not his responsibility to censor the positions or opinions of deputies, referring possible criminal liability for parliamentary speeches to the prosecutor’s office.

All left-wing parties criticized the decision of José Pedro Aguiar-Branco.

Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said he also observed but did not comment on the debate in parliament last week on Chega’s proposal, rejected on Friday by the Assembly of the Republic, to file a complaint against him for treason against his country. , due to claims of possible reparations to former colonies.

If he did so, he said, it would be “a comment on party initiative: ‘it would be participation in the party struggle.’
